1. Do I need a Referral?
A referral from your GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician is required if a) you qualify for a Mental Health Care Plan and b) wish to receive a rebate from Medicare for each session ($137.05 per consult). However, for a non-medicare session a referral is not required. You may be eligible for a rebate through your private health insurance depending on your premium for a privately paid consultation.
2. How long is each session and is the information discussed confidential?
Sessions are approximately 50-55 minutes long. What is said in sessions remains completely confidential unless a) you are at risk of harming yourself or someone else b) the notes are subpoenaed by a court or c) communication is required or implied under Medicare.
3. How many sessions am I entitled to?
If you qualify for a Mental Health Care Plan developed by your GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician (under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Scheme), you are eligible for a total of 10 sessions per calendar year. Each of these sessions currently attracts a medicare rebate of $137.05.
After the first six sessions of the calendar year you will need to have a review with your GP to be granted the remaining four sessions for the year.
